Setting Up Utilities

One of the first things you will need to do when you move in is to call the utility suppliers and put the account into your name.

Standard Meter – You will need to call the supplier and then they will bill you monthly for you your usage.

Prepayment Meter – You will have a meter key or card and will need to top up the meter with credit. When you first move in you may see that there is debt on the meter and no gas or electric is being supplied, or the card is missing. You will just need to call the supplier and say that there is debt, or the card is missing, and they will explain how to get a new card/key or how they can clear the debt for you. They will give you a code to clear the debt and tell you the nearest shop to collect a new key or card.

If you have a prepayment meter, you can ask your supplier to install a standard meter which will give you cheaper tariffs, or, if you want to keep a prepayment meter, you can ask for a smart meter to be installed. This will make it much easier to top up.
